Adult Basic Education/High School Equivalency Language Arts & Social Studies Instructor (Part-Time)

POSITION: Part-Time Adult Basic Education (ABE)/High School Equivalency (HSE) Language Arts and Social Studies Instructor (Non-Credit Instructor): Center for Adult Education; Lawrence Campus (45 Franklin Street); up to 8 hours per week.

SUMMARY: The ABE/HSE Language Arts and Social Studies Instructor is responsible for providing instruction and support to adult learners in preparation for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). The instructor will design and deliver engaging lessons in subjects including reading, writing, and social studies, tailored to meet the diverse needs of adult students.

Non-Credit Instructors are hired on an as needed basis. Courses are offered in face-to-face at our Lawrence campus. Courses are held in the evening from 6-9pm.

**Non-Credit Instructor positions are an "Open Pool" for the Fall 26/Spring 27 Academic Year. There may or may not be available openings at this time however, when an opening does occur, the hiring manager will draw from the pool of applicants we have on file on an as needed basis**

SCHEDULE: Up to 8 hours per week; evening instruction on the Lawrence Campus

RESPONSIBILITIES: Specific duties for this position include:

Plan and facilitate language arts and social studies lessons for adults who either lack a high school credential, or have tested below a 12th grade level in reading, language arts using the MA Adult Education Content Standards
Focus on developing critical thinking skills in addition to reading, writing, and social studies knowledge
Support students' ability to succeed in a high school equivalency exam preparation
Plan lessons for each class meeting
Communicate academic material in a positive and appropriate learning environment
Provide direct instruction, small group and individualized educational activities for students
Use technology to support instruction virtually and in person
Communicate with the Program Coordinator for High School Equivalency Programs
Maintain required paperwork for the class including an online attendance roster, registration forms, and student portfolios

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Education, English, Communications, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with students, colleagues, and stakeholders.
Experience working with multilevel classes and differentiated instruction.
Ability to build rapport with adult learners and foster a supportive, inclusive learning environment that promotes student engagement, persistence, and retention.
Ability to maintain accurate student records and use data related to attendance, assessment, and student progress to inform instruction.
Ability to engage diverse adult learners using interactive and learner-centered instructional strategies.
Proficiency using learning management systems, online instructional platforms, and classroom technology.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree
Experience working with and supporting multilingual learners and students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Bilingual (Spanish/English)

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

All candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States. Northern Essex Community College does not provide employment-based visa sponsorship.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion and review of a background check which will include CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and SORI (Sex Offender Registry Information).

Additional Information:

SALARY: $40.00/hour for classroom instruction.

Additional compensation: Two hours of prep per course, per week; Ten hours of professional development per semester; Five hours of meeting time.
