Salary Range: $18.36 - $24.14

Open continuous.

Starting salary for this position is: $18.36 (Hourly)

Employees hired at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. An employee hired at anything higher than the entry step of the range will have salary step advancement after 12 months and every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase.


About Us

Spokane Community College, part of Spokane Colleges, serves 15,000 students with career technical, liberal arts, and adult education programs in Spokane and surrounding rural communities.

About the Greenery Retail Clerk 1 (Non-permanent classified paid hourly)

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Greenhouse Manager, this position is responsible for sales and customer service duties required to operate The Greenery for student practical experience during regular store hours.

The Greenery is a student-operated flower shop and nursery with three greenhouses where students grow houseplants, annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. Plants and fresh floral arrangements created by students are available for purchase.

This is a non-permanent classified paid hourly position. Not to exceed 18 months.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage retail operations during store hours. Operate the cash register efficiently, ensuring that all monies received are correctly registered and deposited. *
  • Seasonally maintain and update store displays. Keep the shop clean and tidy at all times. *
  • Support student learning activities and provide a positive customer service experience for students. *
  • Serve as an example of customer service for students entering the retail side of the greenhouse/nursery/floral trades. *
  • Order, create, and maintain promotional and display materials used to market student products. *
  • Process internal and external sales orders. *
  • Create and distribute announcements of specific sales via campus email and social media, including Facebook and Instagram. *
  • May direct the work of others.
  • Provide support to faculty for labs and lab areas, including the shop as a lab area. *
  • Provide support to Greenhouse Manager as needed. *
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
  • Comply with district policies, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statutes and collective bargaining agreements. *
  • Support and advance Spokane Colleges' strategic plan and perform other duties as assigned. *

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic customer service skills and experience handling cash transactions or operating a point-of-sale (POS) system.
  • Ability to create floral arrangements and displays that reflect established design principles and require minimal revision.
  • Basic plant identification and care knowledge.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and work effectively with students, employees, and the public.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work is performed in a retail environment including outdoors in uncontrolled elements.
  • Work is active.
  • Move up to 25 lbs. frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally. Team lifts are encouraged and to be used at the employee's discretion.
  • Work directly with students and customers/clients.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Non-permanent classified paid hourly position. Not to exceed 18 months.
  • Work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
  • This position is overtime eligible.
  • Criminal background check is required.
  • This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement. Membership is optional.


Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; WA State Retirement Plan; vacation and sick leave begin to accrue at the rate of 11.33 hours vacation and 8 hours sick leave per month, upon employment. (For positions that are less than full time, leave accruals will be prorated to the percentage of the position.) This position is designated a bargaining unit position and union membership is not a condition of employment. Leave accruals and usage are governed by the WFSE collective bargaining agreement.
