Position Description
Under the general direction of the appropriate administrator in the Office of Academic Services, the Instructional Design, Accessibility, and Distance Education Coordinator provides college-wide leadership, coordination, and guidance for distance education, instructional design, and accessibility compliance, consistent with California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office guidance, Title 5 regulations, and accreditation standards.
The Coordinator serves as the College's designated Distance Education Coordinator (DECO), supporting institutional compliance, instructional quality, and faculty readiness for online and hybrid teaching. This position is intentionally consultative and capacity-building in nature and does not perform routine hands-on course development, remediation, or accessibility fixes, but instead guides, trains, and supports faculty and staff in designing and maintaining high-quality, accessible distance education courses.
This is a full-time, grant-funded, non-tenure track faculty position with a 200-day annual work schedule. Continuation is contingent upon ongoing grant funding.
This position is intentionally designed to:
- Guide, train, coordinate, and support faculty and staff rather than perform routine hands-on course development or remediation.
- Build institutional capacity and faculty expertise in distance education and accessibility.
- Ensure regulatory compliance while respecting faculty ownership of curriculum and academic freedom.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
Distance Education Coordination
As the College's Distance Education Coordinator, the position provides leadership and coordination consistent with Chancellor's Office expectations.Primary Responsibilities:
- Serve as the College's designated Distance Education Coordinator, as defined by California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office guidance.
- Ensure institutional compliance with Title 5 distance education regulations, including requirements related to:
- Regular and substantive interaction
- Accessibility
- Completion of course outcomes in online instructional modalities
- Course approval and curriculum processes
- Support accreditation-related distance education standards and documentation.
- Coordinate and advise on distance education policies, procedures, and quality assurance processes.
- Serve as a liaison between Academic Services, the Academic Senate, the curriculum committee, DSPS/ACCESS, IT, and other stakeholders on distance education matters.
- Coordinate the College's participation in California Virtual Campus (CVC) and Peer Online Course Review (POCR) initiatives, as applicable, including online student support standards and course exchange.
- Monitor changes in state and federal distance education regulations and advise the College on implications and implementation.
Faculty Distance Education Certification & ReadinessThe Coordinator plays a central role in preparing and certifying faculty to teach online, consistent with local policy and Chancellor's Office expectations.Primary Responsibilities:
- Coordinate, guide, and support faculty distance education certification processes, ensuring faculty are appropriately prepared to teach online and hybrid courses. This will likely be done through developing a certification course and acting as instructor of the course (or faculty of record for self-paced courses). Training requirements should include pedagogy, regular and substantive interaction, accessibility, and student authentication.
- Coordinate peer review, mentoring, and cohort-based approaches to DE recertification and improvement of DE teaching and learning, in particular, through the POCR process.
- Maintain records and documentation related to faculty DE certification and ongoing professional development.
- Support new faculty onboarding related to online teaching readiness.
Instructional DesignThe Coordinator provides instructional design leadership and faculty development.Primary Responsibilities:
- Consult with faculty on evidence-based instructional design practices for online and hybrid courses.
- Guide faculty in aligning course objectives, assessments, activities, and instructional materials for distance education.
- Advise faculty on effective and pedagogically sound use of the College's Learning Management System (LMS) and approved instructional technologies.
- Support the development and refinement of online course design standards, templates, and exemplars, in alignment with local and statewide expectations.
- Facilitate professional development on topics including:
- Online pedagogy and student engagement
- Regular and substantive interaction
- Assessment in online environments
- Supporting rural and geographically isolated learners
- Coordinate faculty learning communities, workshops, institutes, and asynchronous training resources related to instructional design.
- Advise on instructional technology selection and implementation from a teaching and learning perspective.
Accessibility Leadership & Compliance SupportThe Coordinator provides leadership in accessible instructional design through guidance, training, and oversight.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Serve as the College's subject-matter expert on accessibility in distance education.
- Guide faculty and staff in understanding and applying accessibility standards, including ADA, Section 508, WCAG 2.x, and Chancellor's Office guidance.
- Promote proactive, universal design approaches to accessibility in online courses.
- Develop and maintain college-wide accessibility guidelines, procedures, checklists, and documentation for online instruction and digital content.
- Coordinate accessibility review processes for online courses and digital learning resources.
- Support faculty in identifying accessibility issues and connecting them to tools, training, and appropriate support.
- Collaborate closely with DSPS/ACCESS, IT, and Academic Services to align instructional accessibility, accommodations, and institutional responsibilities.
- Provide professional development on creating accessible documents, multimedia, assessments, and instructional materials.
Qualifications
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Standards are established in accordance with the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges as adopted by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors for the discipline.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in instructional design, education, educational technology, disability studies, or a closely related field, or a combination of education and experience that meets faculty equivalency standards.
- Demonstrated knowledge of distance education pedagogy and Title 5 distance education requirements.
- Demonstrated expertise in instructional design for online learning.
- Demonstrated knowledge of accessibility standards applicable to higher education.
- Experience guiding, training, or mentoring faculty in online teaching.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience serving as a Distance Education Coordinator or in a comparable leadership role.
- Experience working within the California Community Colleges system.
- Experience supporting faculty distance education certification or training programs.
- Experience in a rural, remote, or small college environment.
- Familiarity with CVC, accreditation standards, and accessibility evaluation tools.
- Experience with grant-funded programs and sustainability planning.
