General Statement
The ESOL instructor is a member of a team of professionals, working in partnership with Worcester Housing Authority, that deliver life-changing education to residents of Great Brook Valley and Curtis Apartments. The instructor is primarily responsible for the preparation and presentation of instruction that is relevant to our students' lives. Our instructors are closely involved in the assessment of student skills, development of curriculum materials, and ongoing communication with the students regarding their progress toward their individual goals. This is a part-time (PT), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Instructor position.
Supervision Received
The ESOL instructor reports to the Dean of College & Career Pathways.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide rigorous academic instruction in the core ESOL areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening to adult learners.
- Prepare and distribute a course syllabus to the students at the start of each semester.
- Develop and implement class educational objectives based on students' needs.
- Implement evidence based instructional practices within the classroom.
- Monitor students' progress by maintaining individualized education plans and conducting ongoing assessment activities.
- Communicate frequently with individual students regarding their progress towards their goals.
- Provide continuous feedback of students' achievements to the Dean and WHA Liaison.
- Collect required student information for reporting purposes.
- Work collaboratively with other teachers in the program.
- Collaborate with the Dean to explore and implement multiple and flexible delivery options.
- Coordinate with the Dean and WHA Liaison regarding students in need of additional services.
- Participate in staff meetings.
- Prepare and evaluate appropriate curriculum materials under the direction of the Dean, focusing primarily on open educational resources (OER).
- Develop a plan for allowing advanced students to act as mentors and group leaders.
- Actively support the teaching and learning process; practicing honesty and integrity in and out of the classroom; strive to create and support a student-centered environment while fostering academic innovation and excellence.
- Work actively with other areas of the college to ensure a spirit of college wide collaboration, collegiality, civility, and teamwork. Respect the function of dissent in an academic institution while advancing a collegial atmosphere of campus collaboration.
- Embrace the ideals of diversity and inclusiveness and support the equal rights of all people by advancing the understanding and appreciation of differences including age, race, gender, ability, religious convictions, socio-economic status, ethnic heritage, or sexual orientation.
- Provide flexible, responsive and high-quality service to all, be they students, community, or staff, and continuously assess processes and procedures and revise accordingly.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Teaching experience in an adult basic education program.
- Ability to teach in the morning.
- Ability to travel (car required) to meetings and various program sites.
- Experience working with adults from diverse ethnic, racial, and linguistic groups
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Curriculum development experience
Strong computer skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in English, education, or related field
- Experience teaching adult ESOL classes
- Demonstrated experience delivering differentiated instruction
- Bilingual or multilingual
