Essential Functions:

The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2021-2022 academic year, we enrolled over 34,000 students in which 60% identify as Latinx, 11% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% as Black/African American, 20% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial. Fresno City College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of a curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Reporting to the Dean of Counseling at Fresno City College, this counselor/coordinator assignment will be to coordinate student services processes and procedures for the betterment of Native American students. This counselor/coordinator will collaborate with the Office of Educational Services & Institutional Effectiveness to develop an institution level response to retention and persistence of Native American students. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the training and organization of comprehensive counseling services to Native American students, including academic, career, personal and life transitions counseling;
  • Assist in the organization and implementation of matriculation activities, such as orientation, counseling and follow-up services to students;
  • Assist students with major selection, career development planning, and goal identification;
  • Maintain close working relationships with instructional faculty and other student services support programs;
  • Actively participate in the American Indian & Indigenous Allies Faculty and Staff Association;
  • Develop a learning community or clearly structured, coherent course-specific cohort designed to promote, inspire, and guide students;
  • Collaborate with other special programs to develop a robust peer mentorship that promotes and develops Native American leaders;
  • Assist with the implementation of the Guided Pathways, Student Equity Achievement (SEA), and other student success initiatives;
  • Lead and collaborate in developing programs and student support services designed to improve Native American student retention and graduation rates;
  • Develop and maintain professional communications and strategic alliances with local tribal organizations including CSU Fresno's Native American Indian Initiative Program, Owens Valley Career Development Center, North Fork Tribal TANF, and Fresno American Indian Health Project;
  • Work collaboratively with instructional faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of professional training to better support Native American students;
  • Collaborate and Coordinate with various departments and committees throughout the college to increase access and success for Native American students;
  • Utilize technology to track student progress, implement efficient support services, provide counseling services, and make presentations in classrooms and other group settings;
  • Review data on student success and achievement and use the information to adjust student support services;
  • Coordinate intentional case-management services to assigned students and provide follow up services including Early Alert responses and resource referrals;
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, trainings, and other professional development activities to maintain the expertise required to provide accurate and reliable information and support to students seeking to complete a certificate, associate degree, or transfer;
  • Monitor and implement programs in compliance with federal, State, district, and college regulations, policies, and procedures;
  • Provide outreach and counseling services, as needed, including days, evenings, and/or weekends at on- and off-site locations that may include local area school districts, tribes, foothill community and native agencies;
  • Develop and/or revise curriculum and programs, including program review and student learning outcomes for courses and programs to assess student learning;
  • Participate in the accreditation process;
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
  • Serve on and attend department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participate in program review, student learning outcome development, and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; and

  • Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family, and child counseling; or



  • A valid California Community College Credential; or

  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

(Notes: If the degrees posted on your transcript(s) do not match exactly as stated above, you must petition for equivalency. A bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional and relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Preference shall be given to qualified candidates of American Indian or Alaskan Native Heritage. (Federal Indian Preference Act of 1990)
  • Applicants claiming Indian Preference are required to submit verification of Indian heritage certified by tribe of affiliation or other acceptable documentation of Indian heritage.
  • Experience and/or demonstrated understanding of the unique social and psychological needs of Native American Students;
  • Experience in designing and preparing student educational plans (SEPs) for community college students;
  • Experience teaching courses in career and personal development;
  • Experience in developing and presenting counseling related workshops and orientation sessions; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.


Conditions of Employment:
178-191 duty days per year. Duty days will be prorated based upon start of assignment.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting annual salary is $70,302 - $113,568 based on education and experience. Salary will be prorated based on assigned duty days. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.
From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection advisory committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications and then determine who will be invited to interview.
The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the "recommended candidates". These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.
A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
