Job Summary


The Director of the Commercial Driver License (CDL) Program provides leadership, administration, and operational oversight for Lamar State College Orange's commercial driver training programs. The Director is responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction, regulatory compliance, student success, program growth, and alignment with regional and statewide workforce needs.

The Director oversees the day-to-day operation of CDL training, including curriculum and instructional delivery, faculty and instructor supervision, scheduling, student progression, facilities, vehicles and equipment, safety, and required program documentation. The Director works collaboratively with college leadership, Workforce Education, Student Services, Financial Aid, institutional reporting personnel, and external partners to provide accessible and effective commercial driver training.

The position also develops and maintains relationships with employers, workforce boards, school districts, community organizations, and other partners to strengthen recruitment, training opportunities, employment pathways, and program sustainability.

Duties/Responsibilities


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and daily operational oversight of LSCO's CDL program and related commercial driver training activities.
  • Coordinate course schedules, instructional assignments, training locations, student cohorts, and use of program vehicles, equipment, and facilities.
  • Recruit, supervise, support, and evaluate CDL instructors and other assigned program personnel.
  • Ensure curriculum and instructional practices meet applicable LSCO, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Texas Department of Public Safety, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Entry-Level Driver Training, and other applicable requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate program documentation and ensure accurate and timely reporting required by the College and applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Monitor instructor qualifications, licenses, certifications, driving credentials, and other requirements necessary for instructional assignments.
  • Oversee student progression through classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel training and work with instructors to identify and address barriers to successful program completion.
  • Coordinate student eligibility and documentation requirements associated with applicable financial-aid and workforce funding programs in collaboration with appropriate college offices.
  • Monitor program enrollment, completion, licensure, employment, and other performance measures and use results to support continuous program improvement.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with trucking and transportation employers to identify workforce needs, strengthen employment pathways, and support student placement.
  • Collaborate with Workforce Solutions and other workforce-development partners to expand access to CDL training and identify potential funding opportunities for students and employers.
  • Develop opportunities for customized, contract, and employer-sponsored commercial driver training when appropriate.
  • Support recruitment and outreach efforts designed to maintain sufficient enrollment and expand the program's reach throughout LSCO's service area and other approved locations.
  • Develop and manage the program budget and assist with grant development, equipment requests, purchasing, and other resources necessary for effective program operation.
  • Oversee the inspection, maintenance, documentation, and appropriate use of CDL training vehicles and equipment and promote a strong culture of safety throughout program operations.
  • Work with college leadership to evaluate program capacity, instructional resources, facilities, equipment, staffing, and opportunities for expansion.
  • Participate in advisory committee activities and use employer and stakeholder input to maintain program relevance and responsiveness.
  • Represent LSCO with employers, community organizations, governmental agencies, educational partners, and professional organizations.
  • Remain current regarding changes in commercial driver licensing, transportation-industry requirements, workforce trends, and applicable state and federal regulations.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL).
  • Minimum of five years of professional driving experience requiring a Class A CDL.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of commercial motor vehicle operations, safe driving practices, and applicable state and federal transportation requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, instructors, college personnel, employers, and external partners.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate multiple activities, schedules, personnel, and program resources.
  • Ability to maintain required records and documentation and work effectively within established institutional and regulatory procedures.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supervising personnel.
  • Experience managing or coordinating a CDL, commercial driver, transportation, or related training program.
  • Experience providing CDL instruction, driver training, or other transportation-related education or training.
  • Completion of a college-level credential, including a certificate, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or higher.
  • Experience working in a college, technical education, workforce education, or other training environment.
  • Experience developing or maintaining partnerships with transportation employers, workforce organizations, or other industry partners.
  • Experience with program budgets, equipment management, grants, contract training, or externally funded workforce programs.
