The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Counselor, Adult Education Transitions, English Performance Success, and ESL, De Anza College.
The Foothill - De Anza Community College District does not have a remote work policy. All employees are expected to be available to work in person and on-site per the requirement of the department. This is not a remote position. Schedule includes on-campus and off-campus responsibilities, and may include evening and weekend hours.

Position Overview
Under the direction of the Dean of Language Arts, and in collaboration with the Vice President of Workforce Innovation and Economic Advancement, Counseling Division, CTE divisions, and instructional faculty, the Counselor/Coordinator provides comprehensive counseling, advising, and program coordination services for students transitioning from Adult Education, enrolled in corequisite-supported English and ESL courses, and pursuing transfer and career pathways.
The position integrates academic, career, and personal counseling with program coordination, outreach, and retention initiatives designed to improve access, persistence, and completion for disproportionately impacted student populations.
Core Counseling and Advising Responsibilities
The Counselor/Coordinator provides comprehensive counseling services, including:
- Orientation and onboarding for Adult Education, EPS, and ESL students
- Academic counseling, advising, and educational planning
- Career exploration and goal clarification
- Assessment services, including transcript evaluation, placement review, and prerequisite clearance
- Follow-up counseling and intervention for at-risk students, including use of early alert systems
- Crisis intervention and referrals, as appropriate
- Services are delivered through multiple modalities, including in-person and online counseling; individual and group appointments; workshops; and other innovative approaches. The assignment may include occasional evening and weekend hours.
Student Support, Transitions, and Retention
The Counselor/Coordinator will:
- Support students transitioning from Adult Education into college-level coursework by clarifying academic and career goals, selecting majors, and establishing enrollment priority
- Provide sustained, proactive counseling support by monitoring student progress, maintaining ongoing contact, and promoting persistence and timely completion
- Address the counseling and advising needs of students in corequisite-supported English and ESL courses
- Support student engagement and leadership development by organizing and accompanying students to career, leadership, and enrichment events and conferences
Program Coordination, Collaboration, and Equity-Focused Work
In collaboration with instructional faculty, department chairs, campus programs, and external partners, the Counselor/Coordinator will:
- Develop and implement strategies to improve retention, completion, and equity outcomes, with particular attention to disproportionately impacted populations, including Black, Filipinx, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, LGBTQ+, and foster youth students
- S erve as a liaison between Counseling, Language Arts, CTE, Adult Education partners, and campus support services
- Establish and maintain partnerships with K-12 districts, adult schools, and community-based organizations
- Coordinate outreach and transition activities supporting Adult Education, EPS, and ESL pathways
- Instructional, Professional, and Institutional Responsibilities
The Counselor/Coordinator will:
- Develop curriculum and deliver courses and workshops related to Adult Education transitions, orientation, student success, career exploration, and transfer pathways
- Provide staff development and in-service training for faculty and staff within the Language Arts Division
- Participate in shared governance, program review, planning, and evaluation activities
- May teach counseling-related courses such as Introduction to College, Career and Life Planning, or Life Skills in Higher Education
Standard faculty responsibilities include curriculum development and evaluation for credit and noncredit offerings (including Credit for Prior Learning, Competency-Based Education, short-term courses, Dual Enrollment, and incarcerated student programs); maintaining scheduled office hours; attending department and division meetings; participating in professional development; serving on college and district committees; and contributing to program review, planning, and evaluation. Faculty may also participate in a wide range of on- and off-campus extracurricular and student engagement activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
- Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family, and child counseling OR Bachelor's degree in one of the above fields and a California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with disproportionately impacted students, English language learners, or students transitioning from Adult Education
- Experience developing and coordinating student support or transition programs
- Experience collaborating with K-12 districts, adult schools, or community-based organizations
- Teaching experience at the secondary or postsecondary level

HIRING RANGE: $84,256 - $135,627 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Tenure-track, 11-months (11th month July) per year.
