Salary Information: This is a full-time, tenure track position with an entry level base salary (for a 175-day academic year contract) of $71,096 - $108,630 annually. Future advancement in base salary, up to the current maximum of $108,630, is based upon a combination of years of service accrued at our college and professional development activity.

Annual salary is comprised of base salary plus any combination of academic year overload contracts, summer effort contracts, project stipends, student club advising stipends, and/or department chair program lead faculty stipends consistent with the provisions of the current collective bargaining agreement between Spokane Colleges and the Association for Higher Education (AHE).

About Us

The Rural Education Department of Spokane Community College (SCC), a part of the Extended Learning Division, seeks qualified candidates for consideration of employment in this annually contracted, tenure track position in Colville, WA. We seek applicants with a passion for teaching, and expertise in Psychology. This position will provide vital support to our students in our rural and online programs. This position will provide instruction to four rural campuses via teleconferencing software and online platforms while also serving in-person students. Qualified candidates will also possess commitment to the students and mission of SCC and to the communities of our rural, northern counties (Stevens, Pend Oreille, and Ferry).

This unique opportunity provides the right candidate the benefits and challenges associated with teaching in a small, close-knit community, while still offering support from and relationships with peers at the larger SCC main campus. Newly upgraded video conferencing equipment creates an engaging environment for teaching students on-campus in Colville along with students connected by video conference from Inchelium, Newport, and Republic.

About the Psychology Instructor - Tenure -Track - Colville, WA

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare for and instruct, through face-to-face classroom, hybrid, and online modes, transfer-level classes in the discipline of Psychology. A major component of the teaching load will include General Psychology and/or Lifespan Psychology.
  • Instruct students in person from Colville with some students joining remotely from multiple rural centers or other locations.
  • Be available and accessible to students for academic consulting and support, in a manner appropriate to meet student needs, through a combination of scheduled office hours, e-mail accessibility or other effective means of responsive and timely communication.
  • Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, including but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process; evaluating student progress and providing clear, timely feedback.
  • Apply best practices in equitable teaching and assessment and support initiatives for diversity and inclusion.
  • Participate in district, division, department, or general faculty meetings; in-service training; curriculum development; academic consulting; workshops or seminars; service on district or college councils or committees, or other activities within the scope of the position.
  • Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follows established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, office support, student financial aid requirements, safety and health issues and related administrative processes.
  • In addition, faculty may have the opportunity to:
    • Teach other Psychology classes offered by the department.
    • Participate in activities designed to enhance student success.
    • Collaborate with other departments.
    • Teach summer classes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • An earned Master's degree or higher in Psychology from an accredited institution.
  • Previous experience equivalent to one full academic year of teaching Psychology courses.
  • Previous experience using technology-based course components and effective online communication (video conference platforms and software including Zoom, Canvas, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with diverse populations, especially populations similar to those at SCC.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement strategies and principles that enhance student learning and retention.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to work with other faculty, staff, and administration.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated experience addressing the unique needs and challenges of rural populations.
  • Experience teaching Psychology courses in a community college setting.
  • Experience teaching Psychology courses in a variety of modalities, including a combination of online, hybrid, and in-person courses.
  • Experience teaching General Psychology.
  • Experience teaching Lifespan Psychology.

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment.
