The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Comparative Ethnic Studies/Native American and Indigenous Studies, De Anza College.

The Foothill - De Anza Community College District does not have a remote work policy. All employees are expected to be available to work in person and on-site per the requirement of the department.

DIVISION PROFILE

The Division of Ethnic Studies at De Anza was founded in 1969. It is now part of the Intercultural and International Studies Division, which includes Ethnic Studies as well Global/International Studies, Intercultural Studies, Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and the World Languages.
De Anza's Ethnic Studies program now includes the departments of: African American Studies, Asian American and Asian Studies, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, Comparative Ethnic Studies, and Native American and Indigenous Studies (which includes Pacific Islander Studies).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE

The primary responsibility of the Native American and Indigenous Studies and Comparative Ethnic Studies Instructor position is to teach a full-time assignment primarily in Native American and Indigenous Studies and Comparative Ethnic Studies courses using student-centered pedagogies. Assignments may include day, evening or weekend courses. The assignments will include in-person courses each term, as well as online and hybrid courses that meet synchronously and asynchronously.
This position will be revising and writing curriculum in these possible areas: Native American and Indigenous history in ethnic studies; contemporary communities in Native American and Indigenous Studies; research theories and methods.

Primary teaching assignments may include, but are not limited to:
  • NAIS 11 - Ethnic Studies and Native American Contemporary Society
  • NAIS 12 - Ethnic Studies and the Historical Experiences of Native Americans
  • NAIS 13 - Survey of Native American Arts
  • NAIS 14 - Ethnic Studies and the Religious Traditions of Native Americans
  • NAIS 15 - Ethnic Studies and Native American Literature
  • NAIS 16 - California Native Americans

Secondary course assignments may include, but not limited to (in this order):
  • CETH 10 - Introduction to Ethnic Studies
  • CETH 29 - Ethnic Studies, Cultural Pluralism, and American Law and Justice

Standard duties expected of the position include: coordination of departmental course offerings/scheduling, cultivating collegiality among department faculty, development and evaluation of both credit and non-credit curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, collaborative participation in department and division meetings and college-wide (district-wide) planning, pursuing professional growth activities (particularly those focused on supporting student learning and success), engagement with the community as a representative of their discipline and department, commitment to diversifying curriculum delivery to best meet the evolving needs of our students (e.g., Credit for Prior Learning, Competency-Based Education, short-term course offerings, Dual Enrollment, Incarcerated Student offerings), and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor and member of a college community. Instructors participate in campus extracurricular student support and success activities, and serve on college-wide and District committees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master's degree in Native American/American Indian Studies
  3. OR Master's degree in Ethnic Studies AND Bachelor's degree in Native American/American Indian Studies
  4. OR the equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  2. Expertise through coursework, research, and/or scholarship in Native American and Indigenous Studies and comparative approaches to the study of race, ethnicity, and indigeneity.
  3. Experience and willingness to teach using different modalities (in-person, asynchronously online, hybrid).
  4. Experience working effectively, collaboratively and across disciplines with students, faculty, and staff from diverse linguistic, academic, socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds; with diverse physical and learning abilities; and with diverse sexual orientations.
  5. Desire to build the Native American/Indigenous Studies program in collaboration with colleagues in the division.
  6. Experience writing Native American Studies or Indigenous Studies curriculum for institutional articulation.
  7. Experience and/or commitment working with learning communities such as Puente, Umoja, or First Year Experience and/or with grassroot-community and college-community advocacy organizations, especially through student engaged learning (community-service-learning and civic- engagement experiences).
  8. Strong commitment to working collaboratively as a member of a team to advance educational equity (e.g. adoption of open educational resources, retention strategies, tutoring/mentoring opportunities) and the missions of the Division and of the College to promote a civic capacity for global, cultural, social, and environmental justice.
  9. A commitment to, and successful experience with engaging students from historically marginalized communities using innovative and effective pedagogy.

HIRING RANGE: $76,596.00 - $123,297.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.
