The Position:
This position is responsible for coordinating and providing support as the college faculty use technology throughout their work, especially as they enhance their teaching and improve student success. The Instructional Technologist assists in the operations of the college's Distance Education (DE) program, which includes support for face-to-face (FTF), hybrid, and online learning; provides related technical training, and supports the college's DE web presence; coordinates and conducts technical workshops on the use of the course management system and other instructional technologies; assists faculty in the design and development of instructional content used in FTF, hybrid, and online courses; provides training and support to students, staff, and faculty to assist them in the development and improvement of their technology skills; works collaboratively with the staff and administration responsible for technology enhanced instruction and learning as well as college professional development activities; directs the work of student assistants as assigned.


Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. 1. Assist faculty with course design, course development, learning objectives, classroom management, active learning, assessment methods and strategies with a primary focus on online and web-assisted courses

2. Support the learning management system, Canvas

3. Work with designated staff, faculty and administrators to develop, modify, or implement training programs on web-based course development, technology-mediated instruction, and concepts of online course delivery to be delivered via a face-to-face setting (group or individual consultation), video, within the course management system, or online

4. Create partnerships and provide leadership and support for faculty and staff in implementing effective pedagogy and use of technology to support teaching and learning

5. Maintain currency in knowledge and trends related to teaching and learning and application of technology to enhance teaching and learning of diverse populations

6. Develop and maintain the Distance Education program web presence

7. Co-chair the Distance Education and Educational Technology Committee

8. Coordinate with counterparts at the District and sister colleges

9. Must be flexible and be available to support evening and weekend instructors

10. Coordinate and work closely with the Colleges Professional Development Coordinator

11. Assist in the incorporation of multimedia instructional course content materials, including images, video, audio and digital library materials using sound instructional design and pedagogical principles

12. Create documentation on internal procedures and prepare reports

13. Assist with assessment efforts, grant and research projects, including conducting faculty and student surveys and data analysis

14. Assist in the organization and coordination of conferences, symposiums, and other faculty-oriented technology programs

15. Collaborate with departmental/area staff and participate in required meetings

16. Assist faculty with understanding and meeting accessibility compliance requirements for online courses and digital learning content

17. Work with external partners, corporations, community, and business representatives

18. Keep current and make recommendations to the dean on educational best practices, instructional resources, and instructional technologies to support teaching and learning

19. Will assist with professional development initiatives as needed

20. Perform other related duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:
A combination of education and experience equivalent to possession of a Bachelors degree in an education-related discipline with an emphasis in instructional design, instructional technology or significant experience in online program development and work in an asynchronous learning network environment

A minimum of two (2) years experience working in instructional technology and distance education or a related field

Demonstrated experience assisting faculty with distance education courses

Prior experience coordinating instructional design projects for an institution of higher education

Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff


Physical Requirements:
This classification requires the ability to communicate to exchange information in person and on the telephone, ability to operate standard office equipment, including keyboard and mouse, sitting and standing for extended periods of time, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects up to 20 lbs.


Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications:


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Advanced skills and extensive knowledge in the use of Moodle and Canvas

2. Knowledge of effective pedagogical practice and the Online Education Initiative (OEI)

3. Knowledge of accreditation standards and Title 5 regulations related to distance education

4. Experience providing technical training in individual and group sessions

5. Ability to work with and train in both PC and Macintosh

6. Excellent skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Mac applications

7. Skill in using web and media-based technologies for education

8. Excellent skills in the use of digital media programs

9. Experience with Online Educational Resources

10. Knowledge of Fair Use Copyright policies

11. Working knowledge of social media use in education

12. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; presentation skills

13. Skill in research methodologies, resources, data analysis and documentation

14. Skill in respectful, sensitive communication with people at all levels within organizations that are diverse in their academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds

15. Skill in directing the work of others

16. Ability to work effectively as part of a customer service team

17. Skill in program planning, implementation and evaluation

18. Skill in working accurately under deadline pressure


Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree in instructional design or instructional technology

College classroom training and teaching experience

Experience teaching in an online environment

Understanding of compliance regulations regarding online instruction
