Essential Functions:
The ideal candidate will share Reedley College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. We currently enroll over 10,000 students of which 71% are Latinx, 1% Filipino, 3% are Asian, 2% are African American, 19% are White, and 3% are multiracial. RC is a Hispanic-serving institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the college has to the education attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Reporting to the Dean of Student Services at Reedley College, the counselor will be responsible for a full range of general counseling responsibilities including academic, career and personal counseling with individuals and group. Working assignments in a variety of settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, and on-line or off-campus as needed, the counselor will be responsible for:
  • Providing the total range of community college counseling services, including: career and educational planning, orientation, assessment interpretation, transfer, student outreach and personal counseling;

  • Assisting students in the development of a student educational plan (SEP);

  • Instructing counseling classes for college success, career planning, study skills and transfer preparation;

  • Planning and conducting multi-media classroom presentations and large group presentations;

  • Implementing retention strategies;

  • Integrating technology into counseling functions;

  • Working collaboratively with faculty members, counselors, staff, and administration;

  • Participating in the implementation of Student Equity activities and Student Support Services Program activities;

  • Working with special populations including veterans, foster youth, and underrepresented populations;

  • Planning, implementing, and assessing student learning outcomes and program level outcomes to improve student learning;

  • Performing other established duties and responsibilities of counselors;

  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed; and

  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;

    OR

  • A valid California Community College Credential;

    OR

  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency);

    AND

  • All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
(NOTE: a bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Ability to interact effectively with persons of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds;
  • Cross cultural counseling experience;
  • Experience working with multicultural/diversity counseling issues;
  • Successful counseling experience in a community college;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with students and staff;
  • Professional experience providing a broad array of community college counseling services;
    Knowledge of student success models/orientation programs designed to improve student success and retention;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.


Conditions of Employment:
177-181 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is $54,029 $83,180 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement. From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview. The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the ecommended candidates. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Student Services and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
