The Position:
Applications are being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Radio, Television & Film (Radio/Podcast) at San Diego City College beginning the Spring of 2023. One of three credit colleges in the San Diego Community College District, City College is an urban campus dedicated to Social Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. City College provides academic and vocational offerings to meet the needs of a diverse student population. The college is minutes away from the world-class San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and Chicano Park.
While the current vacancy is at City College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor. The assignment may include some combination of online, day, evening, Saturday, and/or off-campus classes.

Major Responsibilities:
The Assistant Professor, Radio, Television & Film (Podcast/Radio) position is a member of the Communications Department and reports to the Dean of the School of Arts, Humanities, Communications, and Telecommunications. The Communications Department includes the disciplines of Communications, Digital Journalism, and Radio, Television & Film.

Major responsibilities for the position of Assistant Professor, Radio, Television & Film (Podcast/Radio) include:
  • Teaching classes across a broad spectrum of the area of Podcasting and Radio to include, but not limited to: multi-platform Journalism writing, audio recording and editing, voice-over performance, and audio storytelling/Podcast production;
  • Provide leadership for program and curriculum development, and assist with outreach and recruitment efforts;
  • Oversee and supervise the Student Radio station, oversee the production of Student Podcasts and Radio shows featuring local music and Radio newscasts in collaboration with Student media partners;
  • Teach the theory, techniques and aesthetics of Podcast post-production, integrating new and updated technology into the classroom, lab, and studio settings, including mobile, remote and streaming;
  • Setup hardware/software workflows in editing labs to accommodate course objectives;
  • Working with the department chair, coordinate class schedules that promote Student progress within the course of study;
  • Working with the department chair and discipline colleagues, facilitate the programs Industry Advisory Council to include recruitment of new industry board members;
  • Working with the department chair and discipline colleagues, participate in school and department meetings, as well as on various college committees to assist in shared governance;
  • Stay current with FCC regulations, as well as standards of media law and ethics and prioritizing accessibility, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging;
  • Conduct Program Review and report annual outcomes for Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs); and
  • Fulfill the responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with the San Diego Community College classification description.

Masters in radio, television, film, mass communication, or communication, journalism OR Bachelors in any of the above AND Masters in drama/theater arts, communication, communication studies, business, telecommunications, or English OR the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:
The following are desired qualifications for the position:
  • Academic preparation and experience in Podcasting, Journalism and/or Radio-related instruction;
  • Firsthand expertise and experience producing Podcasts, multimedia production and working with a Student Radio station;
  • Experience guiding Students through Radio/Podcast producing to include concept development, scheduling and interviewing guests, coordinating topics, managing workflow, scripting, field recording, editing, and mixing sound design;
  • Demonstrated experience in script writing and familiarity with writing for broadcast or Podcast;
  • Firsthand expertise and experience producing Podcasts, multimedia production and working with a Radio station or streaming service for a minimum of two years;
  • Demonstrated professional experience in post-production sound editing and mixing and be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Audition) and ENCO;
  • Familiarity and experience with streaming and web distribution platforms for Podcasts;
  • Firsthand experience producing audio content including, but not limited to, Podcasts, Radio content, promos and spots;
  • Ability and interest in teaching a variety of courses such as all levels of Podcasting/Radio;
  • Ability to teach effectively by demonstrating a working knowledge of learning styles and techniques and fairly and effectively evaluate Student performance;
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely and cooperatively with Students and colleagues, including Student media partners, in support of a positive, productive, and professional academic culture;
  • Relevant experience in administrative tasks including class scheduling, curriculum development, grant writing, collaborating with adjunct faculty, master planning using and serving as a liaison between an academic program and other college and community entities;
  • Experience in teaching lecture/laboratory courses in Radio/Podcasting, at the postsecondary or advanced secondary level;
  • Experience in the development and/or review of courses and curriculum;
  • Skill and ability in communicating in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing;
  • Continued professional growth in Podcasting/Radio and teaching pedagogy;
  • Experience and/or knowledge in working with diverse Students populations, including those with different levels of academic preparation, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds and varying physical and learning abilities;
  • Experience with social media promotion and networking with local institutions and businesses;
  • Strategic business background, including advertising sales and marketing;
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) desired, but not required.


Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A - Class 6, Step C ($6,032.90 - $8,128.98) per month based on the current AFT - College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
